Bali greets us under a curtain of rain — thick, steady droplets stitching the sky to the earth, painting every surface with a slick, glassy sheen. It’s not the golden, sun-dappled Bali of postcards, not the sparkling cerulean waters and sunburned shoulders kind of arrival.
We’ve come to Bali at the end of the year, during the island’s rainy season, a time when most travellers would have chosen drier shores. But there’s something about this — the heavy clouds, the hushed atmosphere, the way the rain hums with a low static — that feels intimate.

We tumble out of the airport into the humid embrace of tropical air. The drive to Sanur begins in a Grab car. Sanur isn’t far, but distances in Bali aren’t measured in kilometres. They’re measured in patience, in the slow creep of traffic, in the quiet moments you spend gazing out the window at a destination alive with a rhythm that is a paradox of both frenetic sluggishness and unhurried chaos.
The rain doesn’t let up as we roll into Sanur. The streets here have a different pulse than the louder corners of Bali. The sidewalks are uneven, cafes and boutiques line the main road, mismatched in character and design, as if arranged by an artist who delights in confusion.
Approaching the oasis — an introduction to Hyatt hospitality
When we pull into the Hyatt Regency Bali, the rain is still falling, softer now, like the tail end of a sigh. A long driveway leads to a lobby that opens up before us, grand and sprawling, with wooden beams stretching up to meet the ceiling.

Check-in is smooth. We are greeted with cool towels, chilled drinks sweetened with fruit, and a fluidity to the process that feels simple and easy.
We’re led down winding pathways toward our room. The grounds are a curious maze of tropical gardens woven together by shaded walkways. Spice finches dart overhead, flashes of chestnut and cream weaving delicate lines across hanging vines. The rooms are housed in two main buildings — ours takes us past the club lounge.

We’ll spend hours in that lounge later, wrapped in its cocoon of nature, surrounded on all sides by water. We’ll watch carp flit under lily pads, their scales glinting faintly in the dark pool. We’ll become familiar with the resident heron who patrols the pond with military precision, snatching fish with incredible efficiency.
But for now, we are here. Damp from the rain, a little travel-weary.

Passing the days at Hyatt Regency Bali
The weather here in December has its own personality: insistent, warm, and a little bit theatrical. Rain arrives daily like an uninvited guest and settles in as if it plans to stay forever, draping everything in a gauzy silver veil. At night, the sound of droplets on wooden beams feels like a love song sung by the island itself.
Stretched languidly across Sanur’s weathered coastline, the Hyatt Regency Bali is less a hotel and more a garden with rooms attached. At its core, this place operates like an ecosystem. The shallow ponds dominate first impressions — vast, glassy stretches of water littered with lotus leaves and the odd trembling reflection of passing clouds. Beneath the surface, well-fed fish drift in lazy choreography. And then there are the ducks. Yes, the ducks. A family of plump, white domestic ducks with absurdly bright yellow beaks and the undeniable charisma of side characters in a Wes Anderson film. They waddle along the ponds and pathways with the air of minor royalty on a garden stroll, occasionally pausing to inspect a stray leaf or stare meaningfully into the middle distance.

By the beach, where the hotel’s manicured lawns surrender to golden sand and grey waves, we see a flash of iridescent blue. A kingfisher — small, sharp-beaked, jewel-bright — pauses on a low branch before unexpectedly diving headlong into a bush. Along the esplanade, we watch a young monitor lizard amble briskly up a tree and rest its supine body in the crook of its branches.
These moments stack together into a mosaic of wildness that feels rare for a resort. The adults-only pool near the spa, for example, is not immune to nature creeping in. It’s bordered by a wall of plants that spill over the edges like unruly guests, and occasionally, you’ll catch a squirrel darting across the pool deck, pausing just long enough to stare at you before vanishing into the foliage. A yoga pavilion sits nestled nearby, open on all sides and filled with the sound of raindrops drumming faintly against the surrounding trees.

Back near the main pool — larger, louder, and more social than its adults-only sibling — families splash in the shallows, children launch themselves off floaties with wild abandon, and staff glide by carrying trays of drinks in cheerful shades of red and pink. This pool feels different. It’s lively and unapologetically buzzing with activity.
We spend much of our time at the open-air Regency Club, enjoying the complimentary offerings. Here, time stretches into improbable shapes: long mornings with too many cups of coffee — always fresh from the sleek silver machine. The staff, attentive yet unobtrusive, drift in and out of sight, their presence felt in the quiet way plates are cleared or when a polite voice asks, “Would you like another coffee? How’s your morning been so far?”

In the evenings, we settle into the Piano Lounge, a quiet corner in the lobby where the light is soft, and the air hums faintly with piano keys and low conversation. A chessboard waits on a high table, its polished squares catching the warm glow of overhead lamps. We take our seats, our focus narrowing to the quiet dance of black and brown pieces. Our games unfold with an unspoken understanding: the ritual of it, the way our fingers linger on the edges of knights and pawns, the faint satisfaction of a well-placed move. Here, the deliberation of each turn feels less like competition and more like an ode to nostalgia — two people carving out a sliver of time in a place that seems designed to cradle it.

Perhaps that’s the essence of this place. The Hyatt Regency Bali doesn’t demand your attention. It doesn’t insist upon itself. Instead, it settles into you slowly, like rain seeping into dry earth, until you realize you’re not observing the place — you’re a part of it.
